The Naming of Exoplanets

The IAU fully supports the involvement of the general public in the naming of astronomical objects, whether directly or through an independent organised vote. This applies to the naming of planetary satellites, newly discovered exoplanets, and their host stars. A special Theme with information on the process of naming exoplanets has just been published and is accessible on: http://www.iau.org/public/themes/naming_exoplanets/

One of the important things to note is that when organisations initiate naming campaigns, they must contact the IAU prior to launching the campaign. This also applies to campaigns on change.org and other petition platforms.
