7 May 2014
Upcoming COSPAR Capacity-Building Workshop
the Advanced School on X-ray Astrophysics

Taking place from 17–28 November 2014 in Ensenada, B. C, Mexico, the next COSPAR Capacity-Building Workshop covers data analysis of the XMM-Newton, Chandra and Suzaku missions.

The next Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) [1] Capacity Building Workshop will provide participants with the tools and skills to analyse X-ray data. Named Advanced School on X-Ray Astrophysics it aims to teach astronomers about X-ray astronomy using data specifically from XMM-Newton, Chandra and Suzaku missions. The venue for the workshop is the Museo Caracol in Ensenada, B.C, Mexico.

COSPAR has a regular program of Capacity-Building Workshops, developed specifically for young researchers in developing countries. The main goals are to encourage the scientific use of space data, to readily access the large quantity of data gathered from past and present space missions, and to use online analysis software in order to study this material.

The IAU is a regular sponsor and contributor of financial support to the astronomy-related COSPAR Capacity-Building Workshops. The COSPAR-IAU partnership has proved very beneficial for the alumni of past workshops who are now publishing scientific results and participating in further research meetings. In the last ten years, COSPAR has organised over twenty workshops around the world, ranging from astronomy to planetary science and remote sensing.

Notes

[1] COSPAR's objectives are to promote on an international level scientific research in space, with emphasis on the exchange of results, information and opinions, and to provide a forum, open to all scientists, for the discussion of problems that may affect scientific space research. These objectives are achieved through the organization of Scientific Assemblies, publications and other means.
