New Coordinate System for (4) Vesta

27 March 2014

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group on Cartographic Coordinates and Rotational Elements (WGCCRE) has adopted a new coordinate system for the asteroid (4) Vesta.

As one of the largest asteroids in the Solar System, (4) Vesta is a popular target for research. A new coordinate system is defined by equations that specify Vesta's prime meridian and pole position.

This new system is defined by the parameters:

α0 = 309°.031 ± 0°.01

δ0  = 42°.235 ± 0°.01

W = 285.39° + 1617°.3329428 d

Where d is the interval in days from the standard epoch, i.e. J2000.0=JD ...

3rd "Scientific Writing for Young Astronomers" School

26 February 2014

The "3rd Scientific Writing for Young Astronomers" School will be held in Tihany (Hungary) from 24–28 August 2014.

The direct purpose is to teach beginning PhD Students how to express their scientific results through correct and efficient science writings. In other words, how to write scientific papers for different forums (journals, proceedings, thesis manuscripts, etc.)

IAU SOFA Software - the 10th Release is now available

9 January 2014

A major release of the SOFA (Standards of Fundamental Astronomy) software was issued on 2 December 2013. This includes the new section "Astrometry" consisting of 32 routines and a cookbook.  See the SOFA website at www.iausofa.org for downloads and details of all changes.

SOFA operates under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to provide an accessible and authoritative set of algorithms and procedures that implement standard models used in fundamental astronomy. The service is managed by an international panel, the SOFA Board, appointed through IAU Division A — Fundamental Astronomy. SOFA also works closely with the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS).

IAU General Secretary Interviewed for International Innovation

11 September 2013

International Innovation, published by Research Media, is a leading global dissemination resource for the wider scientific, technology and research communities. Their publications cover a range of topics and disciplines and in the September 2013 ‘Era of Discovery’ edition IAU General Secretary Thierry Montmerle was among the leading researchers interviewed. Dr Montmerle shared with International Innovation his role at the IAU, the role of the IAU globally in the past and the present, and how this will evolve as we look to the future.

 “The IAU is very much alive, we work with some wonderful people, and we are really very ambitious with our role as a scientific union of astronomers, as well as a contributor to society.” said Thierry Montmerle

Public Naming of Planets and Planetary Satellites: process to be set up following first reactions

10 September 2013

The document entitled “Public Naming of Planets and Planetary Satellites”, published on 14 August 2013, outlined the first thoughts of the IAU on a future process for involving the public in the naming of exoplanets. Following the publication of this document the IAU received around 2000 individual suggestions for exoplanet names. A level of public interest which the IAU is both grateful for and excited about.

This first set of suggestions will not immediately lead to the naming of any exoplanets. However, the diverse input received from around the world — in addition to suggestions received since 14 August — will contribute to the creation of an official IAU naming process for the general public and for naming campaigns by organisations. This process, developed over the coming months, will explain the IAU’s global vision for the public naming of exoplanets, and include the development of a specific set of goals, guidelines, and new communication tools.

As a consequence of this work the IAU will temporarily suspend the reception of individual exoplanet suggestions as of 15 September.
