Commissions

Activities in the various astronomical sub-disciplines are mostly conducted by Commissions, coordinated through the IAU Scientific Divisions which steer the activities and evolution of their Commissions.

Depending on their structure, Commissions are classifies as:

  • Regular Commissions
  • Inter-Division Commissions
  • Cross-Division Commissions

Individual and Junior Members of the Union may join or leave a Commission at any time, while belonging to no more than three Commissions (joining a fourth Commission is allowed if the latter belongs to Division B or C). In order to join a Commission, please contact the Commission President and the IAU Secretariat.

A document with an overview of the duties of Commission Presidents can be found here. A list of past Commissions can be found here.
