Obituary:

Valery Ivanovich Valyaev was born on October 28, 1944. Не graduated from the Leningrad State University in 1967. After postgraduate course, he had a long scientific career from a research scientist to the Acting Director of the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He became Ph.D. in 1975. He is the author of more than 60 scientific publications.

V. I. Valyaev’s scientific works are associated with the Doppler observations in satellite geodesy, simulating VLBI observations, and with the ephemeris astronomy. Many of his works are in the interests of the Ministry of Defense and the Navy of the Russian Federation. Valery Ivanovich was the developer and the Responsible Editor of the Marine and Aviation Astronomical Yearbooks, and navigation almanacs. He was a member of the International Astronomical Union.

V. I. Valyaev showed his outstanding scientific and organizational abilities heading The Scientific and Organizational Department of the Institute of Applied Astronomy RAS (IAA RAS). He is widely known both as the scientist and the organizer in the astronomical scientific world, in Russia and abroad among the users of astronomical ephemeris editions.

V. I. Valyaev died 10.07.2017. He was buried at the Pulkovo Astronomical Cemetery.
