Obituary:

It is with great sadness that the Egyptian Astronomical community announces the passing of Prof. Dr. Moneer Hamdy (1942-2016), who died peacefully on Tuesday 5th January after a short illness. Hamdy, M. Received his Ph. D. in Spectroscopic Astrophysics from Tbilisi University in Georgia, Soviet Union 1975. Hamdy Held various positions in NRIAG, the vice president of NRIAG and the head of Astronomy Dept. for two periods 1987- 1994 and 1999-2002. Hamdy taught Astrophysics and Space Sciences and acting as supervisor for many MSc and PhD in Astronomy Dept, NRIAG, King Abd El Aziz University, Saudi Arabia 1979-1983. and Al Albyt University in Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan since 1994-1998. Has much different publication of books, articles and researches. He was the head of the National committee of Astronomy IAU, an active member in the Egyptian Astronomical Society and one of the experts of the Higher Council for Islamic Affairs. Hamdy honored from the Higher Council of Astronomical Sciences - Soviet Academy of Sciences, the Center for Space Research – Libya and Awarded the Scientific Excellence of Innovation from ministry of culture. Hamdy was Chairman of the Organizing Committee of NRIAG scientific conference for long time, and acting as a head of the Higher Committee of 74 inch Kottamia Telescope. Hamdy supervised many of the scientific thesis, in the field of Stellar Spectroscopy, Stellar Atmospheres and binary stars. He made contributions in an unusually wide range of areas. He is often deeply engaging, detail and delighted in discussing the latest scientific discoveries with professors and students alike. His strong presence in the department, his sharp mind, and his quirky laugh and sense of humor will be sorely missed.
