Alfred Fowler (1868–1940)

Alfred Fowler (1868–1940), from the Imperial College London, was the General Secretary of first IAU Executive Committee. Fowler was a world leader in the field of spectroscopy, demonstrating in particular that sunspots were cooler than the solar photosphere. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1910, he became its President from 1919 to 1921. He also drafted the first statutes of the IAU.
