Webb Space Telescope

Since the early 1990s, the Hubble Space Telescope has dazzled astronomers and the public, alike. Though it still produces incredible images that are frequently used for both science and outreach, the next generation of space telescopes has arrived. After significant delays, the Webb Space Telescope was launched on 25 December 2021. Millions (if not billions) of people looked on as the telescope separated from its launch vehicle, unfurled its solar panels, and started its journey to a special orbit in space. Unlike Hubble, the Webb was designed to see deep into stellar nurseries and look back to some of the earliest stars and galaxies formed in our Universe. Instrument checks have already produced stunning images and the first images are bound to be truly breathtaking. The lead-up to the release of JWST's first images has sparked an incredible amount of public engagement and outreach activities around the globe.
