0) From the Editor

This issue of the newsletter contains 2 job recruitment posts, for our IAU Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) and Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO). We welcome you to join us in doing very meaningful things for the world. OAD will also have their annual call soon.

The call for proposals for the International Year of Light 2015 (IYL2015) astronomical cornerstone programmes are still under proposal calling process and we hope to announce the official IAU programmes very soon. Another very exciting IAU initiative will also be announced very soon, unfortunately not with this issue, but please keep an eye on our news.

Clear Skies,
Sze-leung Cheung
IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach

1) Updated on IYL2015: Deadline Extended for the Call for Proposals for Seed Money Support and/or Endorsement for Astronomical Cornerstone Programmes

Development seed money of 10-15K EURO each will be granted to up to three proposals for projects seeking cornerstone status for the International Year of Light 2015. The proposal template and submission instructions can be found on the IAU website, https://www.iau.org/iyl/proposals. The proposals deadline has been extended to 30 June 23:59 CEST.

The full announcement and application form are available at: https://www.iau.org/iyl/proposals.

2) IAU Office of Astronomy for Development Annual Call for Proposals 2014

The IAU Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) is on track to launch its third annual call for proposals next Monday 30 June 2014. This is an open call for projects relating to any of the three focus areas of the OAD: (i) universities and research; (ii) children and schools; and (iii) public outreach. Projects that are not successful in being awarded a grant may still be selected for the OAD's Recommended List, for which the OAD will continue to seek additional funds and support.

The call will be made live on the OAD website www.astro4dev.org on 30 June 2014; so watch that space!

3) Job Opportunity: Vacancies at the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development

There are two contract positions currently available at the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) in Cape Town: Project Officer and Communications Officer. These are opportunities for inspired individuals to join the OAD team at its Cape Town headquarters, during an exciting time in the OAD's life. With 41 projects from around the world funded so far and more to come, there's a goldmine of good news stories that need to be communicated, as well as opportunities for innovation in terms of supporting this growing community of collaborators. We're looking to fill these positions as soon as possible so watch out for the very short deadlines for applications.

These and other opportunities can be found on: http://www.astro4dev.org/oad-visiting-fellowships/

4) Job Opportunity: Vacancy at National Astronomical Observatory of Japan to provide administrative support for the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) hosts the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO). They have now opened an administrative position and are looking for a fluent English and Japanese speaking candidate to support the OAO office. Interested people may check for the following link (Japanese only): http://www.nao.ac.jp/contents/job-vacancy/job-20140530-prc.pdf

5) Funding available COSPAR teacher training in Moscow

During the 40th Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) scientific assembly in Moscow, Russia from 2–10 of August 2014, a teacher training session and a follow-up discussion panel will take place and is being organised by Galileo Teacher Training Program (GTTP). Teachers are encouraged to apply soon and take the opportunity of funding allocated by COSPAR specifically for teachers. The training session will include remote observing, astronomy software, image processing and e-learning repositories, among other topics.
Further information can be found at: http://www.galileoteachers.org/teacher-training-at-cospar/

6) Deadline extended: Astronomy Education Alliance Meeting

The abstract submission deadline for the first "Astronomy Education Alliance Meeting" is now extended to 7 July in order to give opportunity to more people to take part in the meeting, which will be held between 8–12 September 2014, in Cascais, Portugal. The meeting is co-hosted by European Planetary Congress and Global Hands-on Universe. The meeting will cover various topics in astronomy education field including but not limited to cultural astronomy, new technologies, evaluation, assessment, and science research in classroom.
