Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union

The Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) constitute a vital permanent record of the world’s most significant astronomical research and discourse. Published on behalf of the IAU by our publishing partner, Cambridge University Press (CUP), these volumes capture the scientific essence of the IAU's flagship meetings, providing a high-quality and timely overview of fundamental and state-of-the-art astrophysical developments. The collaboration with Cambridge University Press ensures that IAU Proceedings benefit from world-class editorial standards and wide digital distribution. Through the Cambridge Core platform, researchers gain access to a searchable, high-resolution archive of both current and historical volumes.

The primary objective of the IAU Proceedings is to facilitate international scientific cooperation by disseminating the latest discoveries and theoretical advancements to the global community. While the meetings themselves offer a forum for immediate exchange, the Proceedings serve as an archival resource that ensures the longevity of these scientific contributions. Each issue is designed to provide a thematic synthesis of specific fields within astronomy and astrophysics, offer both previews of emerging research and comprehensive reviews of established topics, and maintain the rigorous academic standards expected of the world’s largest professional body for astronomers.

The IAU’s publication portfolio includes issues tailored to different aspects of the Union’s activities:

  • IAU Symposia proceedings document a comprehensive record of the IAU's flagship meetings, providing high-level syntheses of fundamental astrophysical developments and coordinated global research across all major branches of astronomy.
  • IAU Transactions (previously Transactions B) document the triennial business and summarize the proceedings of the General Assemblies.
  • Astronomy in Focus is exclusively dedicated to documenting the outcomes of the IAU Focus Meetings, capturing the concentrated scientific discourse of these specialized, multi-disciplinary sessions held during the General Assembly.

Previously, the IAU also published Highlights of Astronomy (presenting scientific highlights from the triennial General Assemblies, including summaries of joint discussions, special sessions, and invited discourses that represent the breadth of modern astronomy), IAU Colloquium (capturing the outcomes of smaller, specialized scientific meetings that focused on rapidly evolving or niche topics in astronomy), and Transactions A (reporting on the activities of the IAU Divisions, Commissions, and Working Groups - the reports can now be access on the IAU Publications page and on the sub pages of the IAU Scientific Bodies).

Instructions for Proceedings

There are important rules that IAU Authors and Editors should follow when finalizing their articles and proceedings for publication. These ensure that IAU has the necessary consent to publish and owns the copyright, where appropriate, and that articles and proceedings maintain internal consistency and can adhere to widely accepted rules. Observing these rules will greatly facilitate interaction between IAU proceedings' editors and its publishers, Cambridge University Press.

Please read the Rules and Guidelines for IAU Scientific Meetings and check carefully the appropriate entries given below.
