Topics

High impact science enabled by the two Gaia data releases before the focus meeting takes place. Topics cover methods: astrometry, photometry and spectroscopy; as well as science based on Gaia data. We expect progress mainly in the fields of stellar and Galactic structure astrophysics, but also occultation studies and investigations of reference frame is anticipated to show advancements.

Rationale

The Gaia Data Release 1 (at the moment of writing this LoI) will take place 14 September 2016. The coming weeks will show us all the first impact of Gaia data to astronomy. The Gaia Data Release 2 is planned for Q4/2017. It is also in time for the community to use the data for their scientific research to be presented at the IAU General Assembly. The focus meeting aims to present the most prominent advances made with the Gaia data. It is also a good moment to present to the community the plan of new data sets in future releases as well as the anticipated progress in accuracies. Gaia is a mission providing fundamental data for astronomy with impact on many research topics. IAU General Assembly is a forum where the whole scientific community can be informed of these results.
