Inter-Division A-F WG Cartographic Coordinates & Rotational Elements — Functional
Description
The WG is tasked with defining the rotational elements of the planets, satellites, asteroids, and comets of the solar system on a systematic basis and to relate their cartographic coordinates rigorously to the rotational elements. General goals: The WGCCRE has been given the responsibility by the IAU to define the rotational elements of the planets, satellites, asteroids, and comets of the solar system on a systematic basis and to relate their cartographic coordinates rigorously to the rotational elements. In practice, it has accomplished this by issuing a report after every IAU General Assembly, which describes the current recommended models for the cartographic coordinates and rotational elements of all planetary bodies where such detailed knowledge exists, e.g. usually via collection by spacecraft. These reports have also described how new coordinate systems should be set up and how they should be updated when new data is available. The WGCCRE encourages input and is available to assist users on cartographic issues.
