Commission C1 WG Theory and Methods in Astronomy Education

This WG was established to fulfil three needs:

a) The growing amount of emerging astronomy projects, stimulated by the existence of the OAD and its annual calls for projects (but also many new initiatives outside this channel) require adequate research into educational tools, models, quality and impact evaluation.

b) The need to innovate and adapt teacher training, curricula, pedagogical methods to the fast changing knowledge base, the societal changes and the corresponding changes in attitude of the young. Modern astronomy education can play an important role in it, if it is based on underlying research in how to bring contemporary astronomy in an innovative competence building framework.

c) Develop a promotional strategy for enhancing Astronomical Educational Research. Promote summary reviews of scholarly production that already exists. Hence, the discussion within the WG is about a theoretical transdisciplinary approximation to "how to teach contemporary astronomy" at different levels.

Its goals are:

  • Develop a promotional strategy for enhancing Astronomical Educational Research (AER).
  • Promote, in different regions and continents, literature reviews summary reviews of scholarly production that already exists on PhD and MSc Thesis, Proceedings of Meetings and Published Papers in Journals on Physics and Science Education.
  • How to teach astronomy at different levels.
  • Promote structures and well succeeded practices such as GHOU, GTTP, NASE, UNAWE etc.
  • Promote Meetings, Journals and Courses in regions and continents to enhance AER.
