As the largest international professional association for astronomers, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) supports several Symposia throughout the year, specialising in various topics across astronomy to stimulate collaboration and knowledge sharing. However, breakthrough discoveries are only possible when science – its processes, uncertainties and results – are communicated effectively. In 2026, the IAU is supporting a symposium on astronomy communication, demonstrating its commitment to the communication of astronomy with the public and within the astronomy community.
From 2-6 November 2026, astronomy and science communication researchers will share their knowledge about evidence-based ways to improve astronomers’ capacity to discuss their work with their peers, policymakers, funders, and the public, and discuss gaps in science communication research to identify areas for future investigation. This Symposium will be the first of its kind at the IAU, reinforcing the professionalisation of astronomy communication and solidifying its deep importance to the science of astronomy.
More information about registration and abstract submission will be posted on the Symposium website in the coming months.
