Grants Application

The funding cycle is an annual one with funding allocations announced in December for the next calendar year in each of the three respective sectors (Astronomy for Universities and Research, Astronomy for Children and Schools, and Astronomy for the Public). The IAU-OAD call for proposals opens annually on the 1st of July.

All submitted proposals are evaluated by the respective Task Force, taking into consideration the selection criteria as announced in the Call for Proposals. Each Task Force presents their recommendations to the IAU Extended Development Oversight Committee (EDOC). In November of each year, the EDOC discusses the Task Force recommendations and makes the final funding allocations. Final amounts provided to each Task Force are determined by the EDOC and depend on the quality and relevance of the proposals received. The final decisions are made public in December of each year.

Although the spirit of the OAD is to be as flexible and un-bureaucratic as possible in order to ensure maximum benefit from the funds available, it is still important for proposers to provide the detail requested by the dates indicated in order for proposals to be assessed fairly and in a timely way. Projects which are not funded directly by the IAU but which are still ranked highly by the task forces go onto a “wish list” for which the OAD continues to search for funds throughout the year.
