Cosmic Light Cornerstone - Light: Beyond the Bulb

Light Beyond the Bulb

The project aims to increase awareness of the science of light for primarily non-expert audiences with potentially less existing buy-in for science consumption through the creation of an online repository of high-quality, easy-to-reproduce science images and respective captions that tell an interesting and relevant story about the science of light. Free, open-access exhibits would be created from the source materials by a worldwide volunteer network to host science outreach events in everyday situations including public parks, airports, libraries, malls, metros and other accessible venues. This project builds on the success of the “From Earth to the Universe” (FETTU) for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 that led to over 1,000 exhibits with tens of millions of participants for relatively low organizational cost. FETTU outcomes included increased interest in science by participants, learning gains, and the creation of a network of empowered science outreach event organizers.
