Results of IAU 2021 elections

The composition of the new Division Steering Committees (DSC) and Commission Organizing Committees (COC) for the next triennium, resulting from the recent elections, is given below.

Elections for Divisions and Commissions take place every three years, in the year of a General Assembly (GA). Even though the GA has been postponed as a result of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the XXXI GA Business Sessions will be held in August 2021 as planned, albeit in virtual format. Considering the large number of Divisions and Commissions involved, the elections are a major operation for the IAU’s small team, but an essential step in the renewal of the IAU’s structures.

For the DSC, 5,899 votes were cast, with an average participation of 24% by the Division Members. For the COC, we had 3,270 votes with an average participation of 45%

General Secretary Teresa Lago says: “As General Secretary, I was looking forward to a higher level of participation in the elections, in particular as it is the first time that Junior Members participate in voting for the various committees. In any case, it is important to note that the Division Steering Committee voting was up 3% percent from the 2018 vote and for the Commissions the vote was up by 1% from three years ago.”
