Topics

Near-Earth Asteroids, Near-Earth Comets, meteorites, meteoroids, celestial mechanics, interplanetary dust, the zodiacal cloud, the Oort Cloud, the Kuiper Belt, the Main Asteroid Belt, Solar System evolution, zodiacal dust around other stars, minor planets in other solar systems, planetary defense, public outreach, big data.

Rationale

This meeting will bring together the asteroid, comet, meteor, meteorite, and interplanetary dust communities attending the IAU General Assembly to discuss the source regions of the matter that impacts Earth at all sizes. To establish the source regions of meteorites and Near-Earth Objects in the asteroid belt and the cometary sources of our meteoroid streams is important to planetary defense efforts. To better understand the origin and evolution of our solar system and that of other stellar systems, we need to understand how our comets and asteroid originated and evolved. The role of new big facilities, such as LSST, in the asteroid science, big data handling and distribution, public education about asteroids and meteors, and asteroid impact risk policies will be discussed as well.
